Is Your Website Keeping Up With AI Search? We Rebuilt Our Free Website Audit To Find Out

is your website keeping up with ai search - new free website update V2 8.3.2026

“Change is the only constant in life.”
– Heraclitus

In the world of marketing, nothing stays the same for long. How customer’s are searching has also changed. Not long ago, getting found online simply meant showing up on Google. Now people ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, skim a Google AI Overview or are provided three businesses instantly with a simple voice inquiry where they can decide who to trust before they ever visit your website.

Staying ahead of these shifts is our job, not yours. Which is why we took our free website audit and rebuilt it from the ground up. We’ve added the newest methods and technology and passing them straight on to you. We look at what Google and AI actually read, so you don’t have to. We make sure your website is easy to read, easy to find and cited when it counts.

Why Does A Website Audit Matter?

You can’t fix what you don’t know. Most business owners create a website and think the hard part’s over, but what they often miss is that a good website doesn’t always mean a website that’s easy to discover.

Plenty of good-looking websites are nearly invisible to Google and AI because the things that make a site look good to our eyes are different from what makes it readable to a search engine or AI system. A website audit tells you the difference before it cost you customers.

What We Rebuilt And Why | Searchability Audit V2

At Gray Matter Marketing, we didn’t just tweak the old audit, we completely rebuilt it.

First, we took feedback from our clients and expanded the seven categories we measure. Each one uncovers what actually helps your business get found, then explains the results in plain English instead of marketing jargon. Every category now tells you exactly what it means for you and how it affects your customers finding you.

The part we’re most proud of is the custom review process that most free (or even paid) website audits never touch. We run our audit to include Google policy scans, real competitor and market analysis and a full look at your online presence to give you an actual picture of how discoverable you are online versus just a checklist with some numbers.

The Seven Categories We Score And What They Mean

Each of the seven categories answers a different question a customer or search engine is asking about your business.

Search Discoverability | This looks at whether your business is showing up when a customer searches for your services in your service area.

AI and Voice Searchability | Can tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or voice assistants, actually find your business and recommend you to customers.

Trust and Credibility | Reviews whether your site proves you’re a real, credible business worth choosing. This is the category that usually helps determine if a customer actually calls you.

Local Authority and Presence | The where and how you show up for your services in your service area. This category determines if your site proves that you actually know your area and the problems customers within it face. Like an Arizona roofing company not well versed to handle snow or a giant national HVAC franchise that only knows how to recommend a replacement versus helping you stretch your unit for a few more seasons – this is the local knowledge that customers trust and what we evaluate.

Content and Conversion | Does your content on your website actually match and answer what a customer is searching for? Can search engines or AI systems read your content and recommend your business. As well as how easy is it for customers to take the next step on your site.

Technical and Site Health | This is the behind-the-scenes category that uncovers the health and overall technical foundation of your site. This affects your ranking and visibility without many business owners ever being aware this exists.

Design and User Experience | How does a real customer view, navigate and use your site? Whether someone is tech-savvy or struggles with technology, if they get lost or give up, you’ve lost a potential customer.

What Most Website Audits Miss

How Do You Stack Up Against Your Competitors?
What’s the point of a website audit if you don’t know how your site actually performs against businesses in the same market or industry? That’s why we now include a look at real competitors in your service area offering the same services as you, to see how you compare and where you can pull ahead. We look at who shows up first, what they do better and where are opportunities for you to shine. A score along can’t tell you this. We explain what actually affects how your customers discover your business online.

The Truth About Entities and Citations For Your Business
Google and AI don’t just read your website. They scroll through your Google Business Profile, your social media pages, Yelp and other directories to get a picture of who your business is. This is one of the biggest things they use to decide whether to trust you and show you to potential customers. We check if your business information is present, accurate and consistent. Even one missing or wrong detail hurts your online visibility.

Does Google Hate My Website?
Google has its own set of policies that decides if your site deserves to be shown to customers. Our audit scans your site against Google’s own spam and policy rules to see if there are any quiet violations dragging your ranking down.

The Difference In Website Audits

Most free website audits use an automated tool that scrapes your website and spits out a number. Every Gray Matter Marketing audit includes a real human strategist reviewing your site. Their feedback is directly fed into the final scoring alongside our technical system. The system catches the signals that Google and AI look for, while the real-human strategist catches everything else, to deliver you real, actionable insights into your businesses website.

How The Website Audit Scoring Works

We score everything out of 100. With a score for each of the seven individual categories so you can see exactly where your site is strongest and where you’re needing adjustments.

Across all the businesses we’ve audited so far, the average score we’ve seen is a 47 out of 100. In plain terms, that’s visible but outcompeted. Most small businesses show up when someone already knows their name. But when a customer searches for a service instead your competitors appear first and win the business.

If that’s you, it isn’t bad news. It just means your website has real, fixable gaps that keep customers from finding you and getting those calls.

“Here at Gray Matter Marketing, we hold ourselves to the same scoring we put you through. We run our own website through our Searchability Website Audit and aren’t afraid to show you our results”
– Autumn, Owner & Lead Marketing Strategist at Gray Matter Marketing

When we first ran our own audit (V1) we scored a 58. Not the score a marketing company should be getting, right? Through this audit we were able to flag real gaps, the same kind we identify on most of the sites we run through our audit. We did exactly what we tell our clients to do, use what the audit revealed to make the changes, then run it again. That 58 moved to a 68 and finally landed at a 71*, the same site and the same system, just a score that keeps on climbing as we acted on our findings.

Update: As of August 9th, 2026 Gray Matter Marketing’s audit score has improved to 79/100. That is a eight point improvement in two days!

What Is The Point of a Website Audit?

A proper website audit doesn’t just hand you a score and leaves you trying to decipher what it means, it tells you exactly what to fix. So that when you fix it, your visibility increases. Our own site is solid and does its job, but our clients always come first. We’d rather pour the newest tools and our knowledge into increasing our client’s visibility than sit and chase the perfect score.

A website is never truly finished. Search changes, AI evolves and customer’s expectations shift. Regular improvements help your website gain visibility while outdated sites fall behind. A 71 that’s still climbing beats out a 90 sitting idle any day!

With consistency, the right strategy, well done basics and consistent updating, a score doesn’t just jump once and stall out. It builds. We run our own audit right alongside yours, in the open, because the best way to show you our audit works is to show it works on us.

What Do I Do With My Website Audit Results?

Alongside your scores, we deliver three plain findings.

  • Your Current Win, so you know what you’re already doing right
  • A Missed Opportunity, a fix that would move your visibility the most
  • Your Fastest Way To Win, the quickest thing you can knock out now for an easy gain in visibility

Use your scorecard and our findings as a roadmap for improving your website. Whether you utilize Gray Matter Marketing, another marketing agency or do the edits yourself – our website audit is there to help guide you to with real honest answers about how your business shows up online.
